Trip to NY-May 2011

Since Eric was heading away on business, I had some loose ends to tie up in NY so I flew home for about 10 days to pack up the last of my things that I'd left there.   Since we moved to Paris from our tiny Manhattan apartment, and we thought we'd only be abroad 6 months, we didn't pack much...so it's great that I was able to go home and pack up all of our things (High School memories, teaching materials, etc) and get everything in one place.

So, I spent the week packing = not fun, but also got to catch up with friends and family I hadn't seen...some since our wedding.

I got to go down to Rockland with Mom P to see Uncle Al, Freddie, Linnea and Casey.  We had Chinese for dinner and got to catch up for the first time in a long time.

Out at Bull and Buddha in PK with Kim and Amanda.

The time at home also fell on Mother's Day so I spent the morning with my brothers and Mom in Brooklyn and then went back to PK to spend some time with Mom P in the afternoon.  We haven't been home for Mother's Day in years, so it was so nice to be able to spend some time with our family.

These are some beginning photos of the new place.  The video isn't the greatest, but I'm a dork and love video :)

First weeks in TX

While we waited for our mortgage to be processed, we needed to take care of the usual things such as looking for furniture, searching for a car, insurance, etc.  Since we'd lived in furnished places for the past 3+ years, we didn't have anything in the way of furniture...not even a bed.  So, we spent a lot of weekends searching/purchasing all of these items each weekend.  We were also trying to meet friends, find a job (for me) and get to know Houston a bit.

Easter came up before we knew it so we decided to go all out with dying the eggs, having an Easter basket and a big Sunday dinner....awesome!

These are supposed to be eggs on the grass = cupcakes = yummy! :)
So proud of our Easter basket.

Lucky for us, we have some Doha friends that had recently been moved back to Houston.  We are so thankful for their friendship and support while repatriating.  Both Jackie and Donna invited us over our first weekends in Houston, fed us some yummy food, showed us their gorgeous new homes and made us feel so welcome in our new city.

Donna's birthday fell on the 30 of April so we even got to celebrate with her at Papasitos-yummy tex-mex.

Birthday girl!
Birthday success-high five!

The next morning we drove half way to Austin to meet Danny and Meg to get some of Eric's things and his car that Danny was taking care of while we were overseas.

On the way to Austin we got to stop at Buc-ees!  We didn't understand the hype until we went in.  It's definitely not your typical rest-stop.  They have so many products, very Texas-like.  And, seriously, they have the absolute cleanest bathrooms we've ever seen.

We've also noticed a lot of "Texas Edition" trucks...so here's one to prove it.  Someone told us that you had to prove you live in Texas to get one, but we're not convinced.  They are serious trucks!

Hello Texas!

Moving back to the US and Texas was a big adventure and we figured it'd be just like moving any other place we'd recently moved.  Unfortunately, we didn't realize the enormity of the tasks that were upon us...more on that later.

Warning:  The following text is extremely boring and has been written mostly for my own personal recounting of the events.  Feel free to scroll down to the photos at the end or move on to the next, hopefully more interesting post :)

I think I took the idea of the move harder than Eric...it has always been my dream to live overseas, and I just didn't want it to end yet!  And... because I loved our life in Qatar, our friends, my job and, well, I just didn't want to leave it.  I mean, I knew we were leaving Qatar, we were supposed to go any time between when we moved and June.  The project Eric was working on was over, we'd attended the dinners, the celebrations and gone through all of the motions that happen when a project is ending but I was still a bit taken back when I found out we were moving to Texas.  Whenever you leave a place, there's always that feeling of ....I still didn't get to do everything I'd hoped.   After moving as many times as we have, that feeling is still present, but you become (at least I have become) much more accepting of what I can and cannot do. I did all I could, and I am grateful to have had the experience.

Luckily, so many of our friends in Qatar are either native Texans or have lived in Texas (Houston, specifically) and were there to ease our (or my) fears.  We were advised on where to live, what to do, which restaurants are the best, etc, etc.   After a week of this, I was less nervous and more comforted.

We flew in to IAH after a 17 hour flight, gathered our luggage, got our rental car, and off we go.  We headed downtown to our temporary home for the next 2 months.  There was a bit of confusion upon our arrival--I mean, why wouldn't there be?!  After all, we weren't tired after flying 17 hours...even if we did have a seat that folded down into a bed, and any type of food we desired...ahh, the joys of being repatriated!!

Luckily, we found a nice Canadian man (Houston is a transient city, not too many "native" Houstonians) who was able to help us out and get us into our place.  After we dropped off our luggage, we drove through mid-town (area near downtown) and searched for some familiarity, something we could be comforted by.   After a bit of a drive, we found a NY pizza joint....ahh, something we can relate to, we thought.   We paid for our pizza and headed back to our temporary home.  We barely sat down before we gobbled down that pizza in no time, and went to bed with full stomachs and hopes that the jet lag wouldn't be terribly painful.

For us, we've found that going west, (versus going east) is always easier jet-lag wise.  Not sure if this is always the case, but it has been for us.  So, we went through the next few days, almost jet-lag free (just a little sleepy, not painfully keeping ourselves awake as it's happened going east).

We flew into Houston on a Wednesday (30 March), Thursday AM we'd planned to meet our realtor, Mary.  As I mentioned above, we had a lot to do, but no idea how much time it was all going to take.  We started looking at homes that day and saw about 5.  Unfortunately, none of them seemed to be anything we were looking for, at all.   After looking around with no luck, Mary drove us back to our temporary home and Eric and I started taking matters into our own hands.  We drove around, looking for "for sale" signs and called realtors to get a showing.  We looked for possible open house signs and basically scoured quite a few areas of possibility.    Luckily, Houston has so many town homes going up and lots for sale (and things are constantly selling, fast) so we had a lot of options.

Eric had to go into work on 1 April so I drove around with Mary a bit more, to search for something viable.  By that afternoon, we'd found two places I really liked so Eric and I arranged to go back that evening.

One of the nicest things about being back in the US is being closer to family.  Danny, Eric's brother and his girlfriend Megen live in Austin.  They drove into Houston Saturday until Sunday with their adorable dog, Huxley.  Saturday was the night of the final 4 for March Madness so we got to go out and watch the game.  Too bad we didn't get to see it live, as it was in Houston.   Before they left, we took them to a few of the places we were looking at buying.  It was great to have some more opinions and help.

That following Monday, my mom was due to come into town....thankfully!  I needed help!
Since Eric was working all day, I'd asked my mom to come down to help me look for houses.  Eric and I figured since we'd only have 60 days in our temporary apartment, and a mortgage takes approximately 30-45 days, we had about 10 days to find a house. No, not stressful at all :) So, in comes Mom M Monday morning!  So grateful for her trip down here.   She was an amazing help!!! She had the brilliant idea of writing everything down from each place we looked at.  After all was said and done we'd looked at 55 houses and climbed more stairs that we even care to remember.

Looking at houses in Houston was obviously a new experience for me and different than my mom's experiences searching for places in NY.

After a 5 days of looking, we realized that:
1. Everything in Houston is a lot nicer for much cheaper than you'd find in NYS (Hudson Valley)
2. Everything IS bigger in Texas
3. Houston is a transitional city and we were going to have to deal with there being lots of different types of things on each street (industrial areas mixed in with houses, not too pretty)

All in all, we had nothing to complain about.  The houses were beautiful, it was only a matter of finding an area we liked. By the following Thursday (7 days after our arrival), we'd found a place, put a contract in on it and were on to find the best mortgage rate!  Yee Haw!!

To celebrate, we went out to a swanky steak house-Texas style and celebrated with a delicious bottle of wine and filet mignon (mom and Eric)...I enjoyed the yummy sides, garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed spinach and a texas salad-without bacon drippings in the dressing.  Eric and I both say we went from the land of no pork, to the land of pork in abundance!

My mom mentioned she'd like to go to see a ball game so we headed to see the Astros play.
We had a great time cheering on the Astros.  Such good seats and an awesome stadium.

We also ate some Tex-Mex at Lupe Tortillas--a Houston favorite.  There are so many good Tex-Mex places, we really haven't found our favorite yet.   This one was cool because it has a sand box outside with bleachers so all the parents can sit and visit while the kids are occupied.   Only in Texas, right!?

Packing up and heading out...moving away from Doha

This is an extremely difficult subject to write about, mostly because I am so nostalgic about Doha and our life and friends there.  Never would I have imagined that life in the Middle East could be so great, and make me miss it so much every time I think about it.   I also wish I had taken more photos this last week, there are none!!!  I spent the week before we left packing, going around to say goodbye to friends, and just trying to hold it together.

Our dear friends Lauren and Rob were having a 30th Birthday celebration for Rob our last weekend there which was perfect so we could say good bye to as many people as possible.

Lauren and Blue are saying thank you to us for stocking the bar..aka giving them all of our liquor that can't be packed
Rob, Lauren and us

My sweet friend Wendi hanging with me at the Four Seasons one morning :)  It was wonderful to get to spend some QT together.

Oh geez.....the packers are here.  I don't know what it is, but no matter what, if they're packing us up, or unpacking us, I absolutely hate this part!!!

Saying good bye to our Al Zuhoor villa A-33 :(  thank you for making us take this photo, Wendi!!  Luckily we got put up in a hotel for the final 3 nights, makes it a little less sad.
Our second to last night in Doha we went out with Wendi and Nick and Lindsay and Brad at Carluccio's  on the Pearl.  It was a great night spent with these wonderful people and made us want to leave even less.  I tried to take a good photo of the Doha skyline but I just couldn't get it.

Wendi and Nick, Me and Eric and Lindsay and Brad.

Eric and I absolutely hated saying goodbye to Nick, Wendi and family.  They were our cul-de-sac buddies and our first friends in Doha.  You introduced us to Qatar, dune bashing and the boot scoot among many other things.  They helped ease our fears about moving to Houston and reminded us we'd stay in touch-we appreciate your support and friendship more than you know.

Our very last night in Doha, Lauren, Rob, Klara and Phil wanted to get together.  They ended up coming to us at our hotel and we had dinner and drinks at one of our favorite places the Admiral's Club.  It was a light hearted night which made leaving that harder.  One very funny thing that I have to mention that made me laugh and also cry right before we had to say good bye is this.  I was sitting on the couch with Rob the entire night.  It was funny, because at certain points, I felt like the couch was vibrating...hence I thought Rob was passing gas.  And it wasn't just once, it happened a few times, consistently. Luckily there wasn't an odor that went with it.   When we were walking to the car, I had a few things to give to Lauren so I bent over and got something out of the car.  When I bent over, I felt a little "breeze" on the back part of my pants.  I reached back and realized there was a split in my pants!!!!!!  I immediately asked Lauren if I had a split under my behind...she replied yes and said she noticed it earlier and wondered why I had the split in my pants (wasn't noticeable except when I bent over) I realized it wasn't Rob farting but my pants splitting more and more each time I crossed my legs.  This discovery among the 6 of us make us laugh, but also made me and Lauren start to get very teary.  Lauren became one of my best friends in Doha and although we had different schedules, we always made time to connect.  One of the hardest things to do is leave friends and friendships you love.   Until we meet again sweet friends.
I wish the photos we took weren't blurry and you could see our faces a bit better.
Phil, Klara, Lauren, me, Rob and Eric.

We returned to our room promptly and I threw those pants in the trash.  I spoke to a few friends one last time and headed to bed.  Oh gosh, just writing this makes me re-live the pain of saying goodbye.
 Last Doha morning

So long Doha......
